Objectives
Abstract The research plans to investigate advanced, clean, easily disposable materials based on the ferritc iron structure for use in first wall fusion applications. The main problem with such materials is that they become brittle after irradiation at low temperatures. The main aim of the work is to establish the mechanism by which the ductile to brittle transition occurs in these alloys as a function of microstructual effects such as grain boundary character, grain size, composition, and precipitatedistribution. On the basis of this improved understanding, proposals will be possible to modify the heat treatment and composition of the materials so that they have better resistance to embrittlement. The effects of neutron irradiation at energies and temperatures typical of those in the first wall of the fusion reactor will be further taken into account in this study. The net result should be the introduction of an improved, safely disposable, ferritc steel for fusion applications
